A Real-Life Story of Courage, Touched by the Helping Hands of Amigos Internacionales, Child Sponsorship, and a Kind Sponsor.


In the heart of Northern Uganda, tucked away in the secluded village of Ogul, Gulu District, a tale of resilience, hope, and transformation is being woven. The protagonist of this real-life narrative is Prossy Ayeerwot, a young girl whose life has been a testament to the indomitable spirit of human resilience.


Child sex trafficking is a pervasive and complex issue requiring a multifaceted approach. While rescuing and rehabilitating survivors is essential, prevention and education are also crucial in the fight against trafficking. By empowering communities to recognize and stop trafficking before it happens, we can help build a culture of protection for vulnerable children.

Prossy Awerwot, Amigos Internacionales, sponsored child

Born into a world of tragedy, with her mother tragically passing away during childbirth, Prossy’s life was marked by hardship from the very beginning. The loss of her mother left a void that could never be filled, a void that was further deepened by the diagnosis of sickle cell anemia. This condition brought with it a host of challenges, adding to the trials that Prossy had to face. Yet, within her, Prossy harbored an unyielding spirit and an unwavering determination to rise above her circumstances. She refused to let her past define her future, choosing instead to fight against the odds with a courage that belied her tender age.


In 2022, a beacon of hope pierced the somber clouds over Ogul village. The Open Hands Academy, a humble rural school, was established through the tireless efforts of Amigos Internacionales, a compassionate non-profit organization based in the United States. This institution represented a lifeline of opportunity for the children of the village, a lifeline that Prossy eagerly grasped.

The joy of returning to school, the thrill of learning, the camaraderie of her classmates, and the unwavering belief of her teachers in her potential, all served to uplift Prossy’s spirit. Education became her sanctuary, a refuge from the relentless hardships that marked her daily existence. The school became a place where she could not only learn but also dream, a place where she could envision a future that was brighter than her past.

Prossy’s world expanded even further when she was chosen for the Ugandan Children’s Education Sponsorship Program by Amigos Internacionales. A generous sponsor, moved by Prossy’s dedication and dreams, stepped forward to support her educational journey. This act of kindness relieved Prossy of her financial burdens, allowing her to immerse herself fully in her studies. The sponsorship meant that Prossy could now focus on her education without the constant worry of financial constraints. It was a gift that went beyond monetary value, a gift that gave Prossy the freedom to pursue her dreams.


Today, Prossy is a shining star at the  Open Hands Academy. She has embraced education with fervor, treating each nugget of knowledge as a precious gift. Her teachers are in awe of her intelligence, resilience, and insatiable thirst for learning. They see in her a spark that refuses to be extinguished, a spark that illuminates the classroom and inspires her peers. Prossy dreams of becoming a doctor one day, fuelled by a desire to alleviate the suffering of others who have experienced hardships similar to her own. She wants to give back to her community, to use her education as a tool to bring about change and healing.


Prossy’s journey is a testament to the power of the human spirit, the transformative potential of education, and the profound impact of a single act of kindness. Her story resonates with the resilient spirit of the children of Ogul village and underscores the enduring power of love, compassion, and education in shaping a brighter future. It is a story that speaks of the strength of the human spirit, the power of determination, and the transformative effect of education.

In Northern Uganda, diseases like malaria claim the lives of innocent children far too often. These deaths are not the result of complex diseases, but rather the absence of basic healthcare services. The story of Grace, a second-grade teacher, and her daughter, Miriam, paints a devastating picture of the urgent need for medical clinics in this region. A Tragic, Preventable Loss Grace, like many parents in Northern Uganda, works tirelessly to provide for her family and serve her community. As a teacher, she has dedicated her life to helping children grow and learn. But when her own daughter, Miriam, fell ill with malaria, Grace found herself helpless. The nearest clinic was miles away, and even if they could have reached it, there was no guarantee that they would have access to the necessary medicine—a simple malaria pill. Miriam’s condition worsened, and Grace watched, powerless, as her young daughter’s life slipped away. A single dose of medication could have saved Miriam, but without a local medical facility or access to basic pharmaceuticals, her life was lost. She was just six years old. Grace’s story is not an exception—it is the heartbreaking reality faced by countless families across Northern Uganda. Malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea, and other treatable illnesses continue to take lives simply because there are no clinics to provide the care these communities desperately need.
