August 21- Sept 1 Trip to Northern Uganda



Things you need to know:

What to Bring

  • Essential Items:
  • Valid passport and visa.
  • Vaccination certificates.
  • Personal toiletries and medications.
  • Sun protection: sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Insect repellent (malaria prevention).
  • (Optional: Water bottle with filter system). Do not drink unfiltered water.
  • Always use bottled waters, even in the hotels.  We will keep water bottles in the vehicle at all times.
  • If motion sickness is an issue, please bring medicine to help.
  • Many people on first trip get tummy issues, imodium or Pepto is good to have.
  • Clothing:
  • Lightweight, modest clothing for hot weather.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.
  • A light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.
  • Swimwear for any water activities. There is a pool and spa at hotel.
  • Optional:
  • Camera or smartphone for photos.
  • A journal for reflections.
  • Snacks or comfort food (Protein bars are good).
  • Communication:
  • Critical communication link:   Download Whatsapp.  share it with your friends.  It is basically Messenger for international travel (messaging over internet).
  • Some phone plans (I use AT&T) have a good international calling plan ($10 a day and it's just like being in the US).  It must be set up before hand

Your primary task:

Although this is a "Mission trip".  Your primary responsibility is to love on the people.  We have not specifically designed "work projects".  This trip is to give you an overall sense of the work being done and be ambassadors for Amigos upon your return.  There will be no shortage of children and people to love on.  Do not be shy!  You can make relationships that could last a lifetime if you allow it.

Itinerary

Note:  The colored section are the dates of the Medical Camp.  We will be there all three days to assist in any way that is needed.  There will be over 40 medical specialists working with over 3000 villagers, children and families.

Each day will be filled with a lot of travel from one place to the next.  If motion sickness is an issue, please bring appropriate medicine.

The last two days will be a Safari experience where we will float up the Nile River to Murchison Falls, drive through the 4,000 square kilometers wildlife, even staying the night on the reserve with animals (hippos) visiting in the evening.

Cost of Trip:

The cost of the trip beginning Tuesday morning pickup through the airport in Entebbe will be $2000 plus the cost of your airfare.  I just ask that you be in Uganda on Tuesday morning at 6:00 am to pick up our vehicle and driver to the north.

Highlights for our trip:

  1. Agape Baptist Church - Sunday morning - be prepared to worship with the villagers in song and dance!
  2. River Baptisms:   Possibly, there will be a long trek through the bush (2 miles) to a river where we will participate in baptizing new believers
  3. New water wells, churches and schools.   We will be showing the Jesus video in their native language as we work to begin a new church in Loyooboo village.
  4. On the way home we will be spending an afternoon and the next day sightseeing the safari animals.  This includes traveling by boat up the Nile River to Murchison Falls and then driving around the Wildlife Center in a Safari truck.  On our way back to Kampala, we will visit the Ziwa's Rhino Center, where we will walk with the Rhinos almost close enough to touch them.
  5. Then back to Entebbe and a last night at the Best Western where a great souvenir mall is across the street.

Travel Tips

  • Currency:
    The local currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). ATMs are not available.  Bring cash or credit cards for small purchases.
  • There will be plenty of time for souvenir shopping.  Negotiations are expected and bickering with merchants is part of the fun.
  • Connectivity:
    Wi-Fi is available in most accommodations, though it may be slow. Whatsapp is a good tool to have.
  • Health:
    Bring a basic first aid supplies a few bandaids go a long way. Be mindful of hygiene practices to avoid common travel illnesses.

Dress Code

  • For Service:
  • Modest, comfortable clothing is required, especially when interacting with local communities. Avoid tight or revealing clothing. Everyone should wear conservative shorts or pants.  Avoid tight fitting clothes for heat issues
  • For Safari:
  • Neutral-colored clothing is ideal for blending in with the environment. Avoid bright colors. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are recommended.  Shorts are recommended.

Here are your tickets, you can go to each airline, put in your ticket number or booking number and your last name and access your flight, ticket and you should be able to add your travel documents and online checkin 24 hours before the flight!
