In the heart of Uganda, Amigos International’s Medical Camps are more than just a place for medical care—they are a sanctuary of hope and healing. Led by Dr. Paul Mulyamboga and Doctors on Mission International, these camps provide critical medical, dental, and vision services to communities with limited access to healthcare. But the impact runs deeper. Volunteers and medical professionals offer not only physical relief but also emotional and spiritual support, praying with patients and sharing messages of faith. The result is a powerful blend of healing for both the body and soul—something that sets these camps apart from traditional medical outreach efforts.
Uganda faces significant healthcare challenges, particularly in rural communities where access to medical services is limited. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Uganda has a critical shortage of healthcare workers, with fewer than one physician per 1,000 people (WHO). Many families must travel long distances to reach a clinic, and even then, medical supplies and trained professionals may be scarce. This makes the work of Amigos International’s Medical Camps essential.
Each camp is carefully organized to provide a wide range of services, including general medical treatment, dental care, vision exams, and cancer screenings. But what makes these camps truly unique is their commitment to treating the whole person. Alongside medical care, patients receive spiritual counseling and prayer, creating a sense of peace and encouragement that extends beyond physical healing.
“We believe that healing is not just about medicine,” says Dr. Paul Mulyamboga, founder of Doctors on Mission International. “It’s about restoring hope and faith in people’s lives. That’s why we take time to pray with every patient and share the love of Christ.”
The impact of this holistic approach is evident in the lives of those who have attended the camps. One powerful story is that of Grace, a young mother who walked over 10 miles with her infant daughter to reach the camp. Grace’s daughter was suffering from severe malnutrition and a respiratory infection. After receiving medical treatment, nutritional support, and prayer, Grace left the camp with a renewed sense of hope.
"I didn’t know if my daughter would survive," Grace shared. "But now she is getting stronger every day. The doctors healed her body, and the prayers gave me strength to keep going."
Another remarkable story is that of Samuel, an elderly man who had been blind for nearly a decade due to untreated cataracts. Samuel was led to the camp by his grandson, where he received a life-changing cataract surgery. When the bandages were removed, Samuel’s first words were, "I can see!" He wept as he saw his grandson’s face for the first time in years.
These stories reflect the transformative power of combining medical care with emotional and spiritual support. Restoring health is important, but restoring hope changes lives.
The success of these camps wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Medical professionals from around the world volunteer their time and expertise, working long hours to treat hundreds of patients each day. Local church groups and community members also play a key role, providing logistical support and sharing the message of faith with those who come for care.
Financial support is equally critical. A $25 donation can provide essential medical supplies for a patient, while $500 can cover comprehensive care for an entire family. Every gift directly impacts the lives of those in need, ensuring that the camps can continue to operate and expand their reach.
Amigos International’s work aligns with broader global health initiatives led by organizations like Doctors for Global Health and Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). These organizations share a similar mission of providing medical care to underserved communities, but Amigos International’s spiritual component sets it apart—addressing not only the body’s needs but also the heart and soul.
The need is great, but the opportunity to make a difference is even greater. Amigos International is seeking medical professionals, volunteers, and donors to help sustain and grow this vital mission. Every act of support—whether it’s a financial gift, a day of volunteering, or a prayer—contributes to the healing work happening in Uganda.
