Water for Gulu

In March of 2018, representatives of Amigos Internacionales visited a community in Northern Gulu. There were approximately 300 family units surrounding a local school and church.  The school had 200 children attending each day and the church reached 700 people each week. The water resources were slim at best as the students had to carry 40-pound water canisters 2 miles just to have water to drink, wash hands, and provide for sanitary needs in the bathroom.

Amigos felt the need to help this community and set out to raise the money to drill a well.  Upon the initial site survey, however, they found the lateral lines of several latrines had infiltrated the shallow well the community was using. This was causing sickness within the community, including Typhoid, Cholera, and Hepatitis B. Knowing we could not wait for the money to come in, the Amigos Board of Directors immediately released the funds to the drilling company and have scheduled a deep well, (200 meters) be drilled commencing Sept 1.

When announced to the community, the people were ecstatic, singing and dancing as seen in the video below. Amigos is glad we can provide clean, safe drinking water for a community suffering from waterborne pathogens!

If you would like to donate to this project and help us complete this well, you can do so here.

Thanksgiving dance for the announcement of a well being dug for their community, church and school.
