Sponsoring a child can be a transformative experience, not just for the child, but also for the sponsor. In my journey with Amigos, I found an unexpected path to healing and purpose. When I lost Cassie, my two-month-old twin, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), a deep void was left in my heart. The grief was overwhelming, but in that darkness, I discovered a flicker of light - the opportunity to sponsor a child.
I chose to sponsor Mary, a young girl whose life circumstances were heartbreakingly difficult. Living as the head of an orphan-run household in a poverty-stricken region, the concept of education, let alone school supplies or books, was a distant dream for her. When I learned about her situation, I felt a strong urge to help. It was a moment of realization for me - I could make a difference in someone's life.
The
cost of sponsorship, $38 a month, initially seemed daunting.
I had my own financial constraints and could not physically travel to Africa to help. However, I was inspired by the comprehensive support Amigos offered through their Missionpoint initiative.
They provided not only education but also essential supplies, school uniforms, and even took care of refugees by offering food, disaster relief, and community-building projects like church constructions, life skills training, and water well drilling. It dawned on me that by forgoing just one meal out a month, I could contribute to this noble cause.
What started as a small step turned into a journey of incredible growth and fulfillment. Through the collective efforts of donors like myself, Amigos has been able to offer a personalized and professional approach to meet each child's individual needs. This holistic support enables these children to become independent and functional members of their families, orphanages, schools, villages, and eventually, the global community.
When I first saw Mary's profile on the Amigos website, her story and aspirations immediately struck a chord with me. Her dream of becoming a nurse, her resilience in the face of adversity, and her spirit of wanting to help her family and others were deeply inspiring. Her image - in a tattered dress and with a dirt-smudged face - was a stark reminder of the harsh realities of poverty.
Over the years, my connection with Mary has grown stronger through the exchange of letters, pictures, activities, videos, and personal emails of gratitude. Amigos' sponsorship program facilitated this bond, allowing me to witness the tangible changes in Mary's life. The updates on her progress, her increasing confidence, and her gratitude for the new clothes, shoes, books, and educational tools she received were heartwarming.
The impact of the sponsorship extended beyond just Mary. I remember vividly the joy that spread across the community when the elementary school received new playground equipment. The photographs of children playing for hours, their laughter and smiles, were a testament to the positive changes brought about by the program.
One of my most cherished memories is receiving a photograph of Mary holding her Amigo Christmas presents. These were not just gifts; they were tools for sustainability and growth. She received laying chickens and a nanny goat, providing her family with a steady supply of eggs and milk. These resources offered more than just nutrition; they provided a means for self-sufficiency and even the potential for small-scale entrepreneurship.
Amigos' work in the community doesn't stop there. The introduction of a small tractor revolutionized agricultural practices, enabling the creation of a community garden. This garden became a source of food and a communal space for everyone, adding significantly to the well-being of Mary's and the surrounding community.

I am continually impressed by Amigos' commitment to impactful projects. Their initiatives in building churches, saving souls, drilling water wells, and feeding thousands demonstrate their dedication to making a difference on a large scale. They've even provided sewing machines and training to villagers, fostering another avenue for economic growth and community development.
The installation of a water well before the construction of the local school was another milestone. It dramatically improved the quality of life for the villagers, including Mary, who no longer had to undertake long, arduous trips to fetch water. This well became a lifeline for the community, a source of fresh water easily accessible to all.
The growth and development I've seen in Mary over the years have been remarkable. From a young girl with aspirations of being a nurse, she has evolved into a confident individual dreaming of becoming a doctor. This change in ambition is a reflection of the expanding horizons that Amigos' sponsorship program has opened for her. The support and opportunities provided have nurtured her dreams and transformed them into achievable goals.
When I reflect on what sponsoring a child through Amigos has meant to me, the answer is profound yet simple - it means "EVERYTHING."
It's a journey of shared dreams, hopes, and successes. It's about being part of something bigger, a collective effort to empower and uplift. It’s about witnessing the power of faith and the remarkable resilience of the human spirit.
