At Amigos Internacionales, we believe that every community, no matter how remote, deserves access to essential healthcare. In Northern Uganda, where we have worked tirelessly to establish our MissionPoint initiatives, the need for medical care is more urgent than ever. These communities, many of which are home to refugees and families struggling with the aftermath of war and displacement, face critical healthcare challenges that must be addressed. That’s why we are committed to building small medical clinics at every MissionPoint, staffed by a nurse throughout the week and supported by a rotating medical doctor who will visit each clinic one day a week.
Northern Uganda, a region ravaged by civil war for over two decades, is still struggling to rebuild. The scars of this conflict are evident in the weak infrastructure, and healthcare systems that simply cannot meet the needs of the population. The numbers paint a stark picture. According to reports, there are only 0.12 physicians per 1,000 people in Uganda. This shortage means that many people, particularly those in rural and remote areas, go without necessary medical care for preventable diseases like malaria, HIV, and tuberculosis .
Our MissionPoint communities, spread across Northern Uganda and into refugee settlements, are particularly vulnerable. The distance to the nearest healthcare facility often spans over 16 miles, and many residents simply cannot make the journey due to lack of transportation or the severity of their illness. Even when they can reach a clinic, the resources are often limited—50% of clinics lack basic medical supplies such as sterile syringes and antibiotics . This is why building local medical clinics at each MissionPoint is not just a luxury, but a necessity.
Uganda is home to 1.5 million refugees, many of whom have fled conflict in neighboring South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo . Refugee settlements like Bidibidi, Palorinya, and Rhino Camp are some of the largest in the world. Despite Uganda’s commendable open-door policy for refugees, healthcare services in these camps are severely under-resourced. According to the World Health Organization, 77% of refugees in Uganda do not have access to basic medical care. This gap has devastating consequences, particularly for children, where the mortality rate in refugee camps is a staggering 89 deaths per 1,000 live births due to preventable diseases like diarrhea, malnutrition, and pneumonia .
Our MissionPoint clinics will serve not only the local population but also the refugees who call these settlements home. By placing a nurse at each facility throughout the week and having a doctor rotate between clinics once a week, we can provide both regular care and specialist medical attention when needed.
Why is a local clinic so important? The answer lies in the impact on the community. Having a nurse at the clinic every day means that mothers can bring their children in for check-ups and vaccinations without traveling long distances. The availability of basic treatments can prevent common illnesses from becoming life-threatening. Additionally, a rotating doctor can provide more advanced care and referral services that can make a difference in emergencies or more complex cases.
The need for maternal and child health services is particularly urgent. Uganda has an alarmingly high maternal mortality rate, with 438 mothers dying per 100,000 births . Many of these deaths are preventable with better access to healthcare. A local clinic can ensure that pregnant women receive regular prenatal care and that emergencies during childbirth are addressed quickly. This kind of care is vital for saving both mothers and newborns.
Moreover, these clinics won’t just provide healthcare—they’ll also be economic hubs. By hiring local nurses and staff, we’ll be creating jobs and empowering local communities. This is part of our broader mission at Amigos Internacionales: to uplift communities through sustainable development.
At Amigos Internacionales, our MissionPoints are more than just a series of projects—they are holistic solutions designed to meet the needs of entire communities. Each MissionPoint already includes a school, a church, and a water well, addressing educational, spiritual, and physical needs. But healthcare is the missing link.
By incorporating clinics into every MissionPoint, we will be able to address the most urgent needs of these communities. Clean water and healthcare go hand-in-hand—our wells are helping to prevent waterborne diseases, but healthcare is necessary to treat illnesses that can’t be avoided . Furthermore, the clinics will support our education efforts by ensuring that children are healthy enough to attend school and learn.
We know that this model works. In our existing MissionPoints, we’ve seen firsthand how access to basic resources transforms lives. The addition of clinics will only deepen that impact. We’re not just treating illnesses—we’re giving these communities a chance at a brighter, healthier future.
To make this vision a reality, we need your help. The cost of building and staffing these clinics is significant, but the impact will be immeasurable. Every donation, whether big or small, brings us one step closer to providing essential healthcare services to the people of Northern Uganda and the refugees who rely on us.
By supporting this initiative, you are directly improving the quality of life for thousands of people. You’re helping children grow up healthy, mothers give birth safely, and entire communities thrive.
