Bethel Smile — Cleft Care for Children in Uganda

Real children. Real surgeries. Real change.
Bethel Smile is Amigos Internacionales’ cleft-care program in Uganda. It connects children and families with specialized surgical care—and stays involved through healing, feeding, nutrition and follow-up.
A cleft condition can affect far more than appearance.
An unrepaired cleft lip or palate can interfere with feeding, nutrition and speech. For rural families, distance, transportation and the cost of specialized care can keep treatment out of reach. Bethel Smile exists to help bridge those barriers.
What does Bethel Smile provide?
- Community identification and verified patient documentation.
- Connections to qualified hospitals, surgeons and medical partners.
- Help with transportation, supplies and access barriers.
- Cleft-lip and cleft-palate surgery when medically appropriate.
- Follow-up for healing, feeding and nutrition.
- Connections to speech and rehabilitative support when available.
A successful operation matters. Staying with the child afterward matters, too.
Meet Calvin.
Calvin received a successful cleft-lip repair, but his palate still required a second procedure. During follow-up, Dr. Paul documented continuing feeding difficulties and concern about malnutrition. Bethel Smile’s work did not end when Calvin left the operating room.
Meet Asiimwe.
Asiimwe Madena Anyesha, from Anaka in northern Uganda, was documented for cleft-lip repair through the July 2026 Bethel Cleft Repair Program at C-Care Hospital in Gulu. Amigos is following her story using verified program records while unresolved details remain unpublished.
What does cleft care cost?
There is no single price for every child. July 2026 program documentation listed cleft-lip repairs at $2,000 and cleft-palate repairs at $2,500. Transportation, nutrition, follow-up and additional treatment can add to the total. Amigos reports documented needs rather than pretending every case is identical.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bethel Smile only a surgery program?
No. Surgery is central, but the care pathway can also include identification, transportation, nutrition, recovery monitoring and connections to speech or rehabilitation support.
Does every child need the same procedure?
No. Cleft lip and cleft palate are different conditions, and some children need staged procedures or additional support.
How does Amigos protect the truth of each story?
Names, procedures, status and images are checked against Amigos and Doctors on Mission source records. When a detail is uncertain, Amigos leaves it unpublished rather than substituting another child or inventing an answer.
